Complete Class!

With an amazing opportunity of international curling events, WCT events, Briers, and hundreds of charity events, there is one story that I use time and time again to explain the character that epitimizes so many of the curlers and fans in the roarin' game. This story is from the 2001 Continental Cup, held in Regina, Saskatchewan .

This event featured the best 6 teams from North America against the best six teams from Europe. In a typical Continental Cup fashion, after four days of mixed, skins, regular format, and singles competition, and 200 points on the table, the entire event came down to a winner-take-all final between Peja Lindholm and Kevin Martin.North America was in big trouble part way through this game, and it looked like Euprope was about to win the inaugural event. However, at that time, Martin was certainly the king of skins, and we knew if he won the last four ends, we could still take the title .

Obviously any curler would rather be on the ice to help with the cause, but Team Ferbey was relegated to chewing our finger nails, and providing as much emotional support as we could for the Martin Team, along with the rest of North America.

In a moment of siliness, Marcel Rocque and myself decided to use the baseball tradition of the "rally caps" to try to add some motivation for our guys on the ice. Within minutes, all 20 of the North American team members had our jackets on backbards and cheering on Martin!

The best part of this story came when we started getting the crowd into it as well. To all of our shock and surprise, we soon realized that the first fan to join in the rally jackets was sitting right behind us, and was none other than the legendary Ernie Richardson! Just reconfirming why Ernie is part of the classiest curling family, and the most sccessful team in history, Ernie was right there cheering on his fellow Canadians. On that day, the crowd and Ernie, became a part of Team North Amercia, and more importantly to me, someone that every one of us should try to emulate .

I have since had the honour of speding some significant and valuable time with both Ernie and Sam, as well as Ernie's son Jim. When you get to know this family, you realize that they are so much more than just great curlers!

No matter what records are broken, who wins future titles, or even the impact of the olympics, I can tell you from first hand experience, that the Richardsons will always be the greatest on, and off the ice of all time!
